COLOMBIA PANORAMA

Technical errors of the urban landscape, narratives for memory and gender, programmed images and other modes of experimental animation and documentation pass before the eyes of the spectators adding layers of meaning from the experience that the images and the non -regulatory sounds provide, to leave in them the image of what we are and we are not audiovisually in Colombia. In this way, these 5 works make up a program that completes the map of the national audiovisual experimental vanguard of 2023.

The figure of the filmmaker’s father comes to them in dreams, his voice visits him with the smell of rain and his embrace lies in an old country house.
The dialogue with the images that preserve the memory of his childhood allow him to reconstruct thoughts and conversations that he never had, about his relationship with his father and his sexual and gender identity.

“What we call time is more than anything a repetition of events that, from our perspective, form cycles that, when repeated, make us think of durations. It is absolutely true that time varies according to the observer, and therefore the experience of time is an adjustment, association or modification of our neural patterns” Jacobo Grinberg
The memory housed in the mind is a series of images that are sustained, do not contain a specific form, vary from one to another, are deformed, distorted. We constantly create the past as if it were part of a present, but over time everything is deconstructed, blurred. Memory is a movie in real time and variable, when we are thrown there, we can spend hours and hours contemplating, it is a loop of impermanence. When I experiment with artificial intelligence images, I seem to find a relationship with how our mind manifests memories, the thoughts that are passing are transformed from one form to another, as in the interpolations of the neural networks that we train. Although AI is far from the neural complexity of our brain, this familiarity that occurs between the generated images and our mental images is still strange. For this project, almost daily and for approximately 6 months, photos were taken of the Bear Mountain, located on the outskirts of Bogotá at 3,200 meters above sea level and seen from inside the city. The sounds were collected directly in the páramo of the mountain and its surroundings, sacred Muisca territory. Through deep listening, natural sounds of mountain congas and other wind tones came to light. The material was trained with neural networks from free access notebooks such as VqGan and StyleGan. There is a constant tension between the digital world and the world that we call real, this tension becomes more poignant when talking about artificial intelligence, what interests me at this point is to question, glimpse or in a certain way open up the very nature of what real and the notion of certainty that is established in time, memory and matter

Airing out the dirty laundry, is a 9-minute experimental short documentary about five housewives from my family in a southern peripheric neighborhood of Colombia. Through the creation of a collective tattoo with traditional handpoke techniques, I ink and punture the hands of my mother, grandmothers and aunts to create a red thread, as a way to honour the housework and homecare to which they have devoted their whole lives. While the tattoo takes place on their hands, a woman tells a fictional story which evokes the tattoo as a sign of resilience for the body and its wounds.
